What if Daniel really was Danielle LaRusso and after seeing her on the beach with Ali, Johnny's big plan was to try and make Ali jealous by (fake) dating her? Danielle is game to play along because "dating" the popular guy is one way of making a mark at a new school. Something, something: feelings. Bonus for bi!Danielle who also has feelings for Ali
From: (Anonymous)
WARNING for some slightly underage sexual content (but it will take awhile to get there).

***

Johnny first saw her when she and Ali came splashing out of the water together, laughing and holding hands. He had never seen her before; he would've remembered that long curly dark hair. He didn't think long about her before shoving his helmet back onto his head and roaring down the little path toward them, determined to win Ali back or at least try. Damnit, she had been the one good loving thing in his life -- who could blame him for wanting her back?

Ali's face fell, and she sat down next to her radio and pointedly ignored him. Her new friend, perhaps not knowing anything about the situation, flopped down on the blanket beside her. "C'mon Johnny, let it go," Bobby pleaded behind him, even as Johnny made his way to the girls.

"Ali, just talk to me, all right?"

"No, Johnny!" That fire in her voice, it hit him in all the familiar places. Her cheeks were slightly reddened from the sun and she was yanking on her sweater over her little blue swimsuit. "There's nothing to talk about. It's over between us."

"It's not over for me--" he started to say, and then she turned up the radio, trying to drown him out. Johnny growled in frustration. If she would just talk to him, he was sure he could fix things between them. He reached over and turned the radio off.

Ali glared at him. "I was listening to that."

"Now you're not. Anyway, we can work this out."

"Hey!" The dark-haired girl jumped to her feet and got in his face. Was she wearing a wet sports bra and a pair of bike shorts? What kind of girl didn't even have a swimsuit to wear to the beach? "Where I'm from, a girl tells a guy it's over, it's over!"

"Yeah, well why don't you butt out and go back to wherever you're from!" Now Johnny was really irritated. He was just trying to have a civil conversation and it was going all pear-shaped. Now that stupid radio was back on and Ali was back to trying to ignore him. He pushed past the new girl and tried to talk to Ali again.

"Hey!" the new girl yelped.

"Johnny, c'mon," Bobby said. "Don't go shoving the girls, man!"

"Yeah, way to go, Johnny." Ali's eyes were blazing. "It's only Danielle's second day in California, way to show her what lunkheads the local guys are." She snatched up her radio, linked arms with this Danielle girl, and they strutted away from him, Susan and Barbara following closely behind. Johnny was powerless to do anything but let them walk away.

"Ah, better luck next time," Jimmy told him.

Johnny cut him a look over his shoulder.

Tommy cackled. "I dunno, did you see that new girl? Daniela or whatever? She's pretty cute."

"She's not even in Ali's league," sniffed Johnny, indignant at the thought of even comparing another girl to his Ali.

"Maybe not, but she had legs up to her neck! And you know what they say -- the best way to get over one girl is to get on top of another one."

"Does anyone really say that?" Bobby sounded skeptical.

Johnny didn't reply, just stormed over to his bike and cranked it up, sand streaming behind him like a plum as he headed back up the path. At the crest of the hill he paused, revving the engine, still watching the distant figures as they made their way down the beach, the setting sun bathing them in warm golden tones, setting Ali's shorter blonde hair aglow while Danielle's long dark hair danced around her on the breeze.

Danielle was locking her bike up outside the school when the roar of engines and boyish whooping heralded the arrival of the four boys from last night, blazing into the parking lot on their Hondas. They were wearing the same jackets from yesterday evening, high-fiving and jeering playfully at each other as they dismounted. Just her luck, they had to go to her high school! She walked past them but they didn't seem to notice her.

Danielle hadn't exactly been thrilled about leaving what few friends she had made behind in Newark. She'd even held out hope that her mom would pack it in and return to Jersey, but their car was in such bad shape Danielle didn't even think that junker would make it back across the country, so they were probably stuck here.

C'mon honey, her mom Lucille had said. We've got a chance to start all over in the land of palm trees! A new beginning, a new school -- Danielle didn't quite hope to become popular, but maybe her mom was right, maybe she could make some new friends and find her niche.

Ali and her two tagalongs, Susan and Barbara, caught up with her after first period. "Hi, Dani!" Ali greeted her warmly. "I think we have algebra together."

Ali was the quintessential blonde California dream girl. Danielle had never felt more out of place than she did walking next to Ali, but Ali was so damn friendly that she couldn't hold it against her. "Yeah? Wanna swap notes?"

Susan smacked her gum a little louder than necessary.

"Sure! By the way, I'm sorry for how Johnny treated you yesterday." Ali blew a sigh through her nose. "It's been over for weeks and he just hasn't moved on."

"Oh, it's no big deal," Danielle said, trying to play it cool. She had been a little surprised when he pushed her to the side, but it hadn't really been a hard push. "I almost forgot all about it. Anyway, I hope Johnny stops hassling you."

"I don't get why you won't give him another chance," Barbara piped up. "He's the hottest guy in school, Ali, maybe the hottest guy in the Valley! How are you going to do better than Johnny Lawrence?"

"I'm not thinking about boys right now," Ali told Barbara, pressing her books to her chest. "I need to concentrate on my grades if I want to get into UCLA. And Johnny will do fine on his own. Every girl in this school wants to go out with him, he'll find someone new."

Susan and Barbara started teasing each other and Ali about boys they had crushed on or they knew had crushes on them. Danielle felt a little awkward and left out of the conversation about guys. She'd never had a boyfriend -- she'd kissed Frankie Murello under the bleachers two years ago, but then he'd lied and told everyone who'd listen that she'd let him feel her up under her bra, and she'd cried for two weeks.

No one believes him, Dani, her best friend Judy had consoled her, brushing her hair out of her sweaty, tear-stained face. You don't even wear a bra yet.

"Dani," Ali said, snapping her out of her memories. "Are you going to cheerleader tryouts today with us?"

Susan elbowed Ali a little harshly, and Ali shot her a look that Danielle couldn't quite understand. "Ah, sure," Danielle said, twisting a strand of her unruly hair around a finger. "You really think I'm cheerleader material?"

"You've got potential!" Ali told her, and this time, Danielle clearly saw Susan roll her eyes in exasperation. "Tryouts are this afternoon after fourth period, okay?"

"Okay," Danielle agreed, not quite sure what she was getting herself into. Second and third periods flew by, and then she ran to the girls locker room to get changed into her gym clothes. Ali sat beside her on the bench, and helped braid her hair while Danielle furtively glanced around the locker room. All the other girls were so developed, with peaches-and-cream skin like Ali's with a flush of sun coloring their cheeks. Danielle bronzed, not burnt, in the sun, and she looked gawky next to the cheerleaders with their strong arms and legs. None of them still wore a training bra.

Outside on the athletic field, the boys were trying out for soccer. Danielle couldn't help but be distracted momentarily by their gleaming arms and fast footwork. These California boys seemed to be some other breed, the boys back in Newark didn't look like that. Then the captain blew her whistle and Danielle had to snap back to attention, trying the kicks and jumps like Ali showed her.

She was shaking her green-and-white pompoms when the soccer ball came flying over toward her. Without thinking, Danielle caught it, kicking it up and bouncing it off her knee like she used to when she played with Cousin Louie and the neighborhood kids.

It was Johnny, the boy from the beach, who came running to fetch the ball. Their eyes met for a split second; he gave her a strange look then took the ball back and returned to the soccer practice. Danielle watched him go, only belatedly remembering she was supposed to be doing choreography and trying to get back in sync with the other girls before everyone noticed.

"--I just don't see why Ali wants to hang out with her so much!" At the mention of Ali's name, Johnny snapped out of his torpor and glanced into his rearview mirror to see Susan pulling a face as she talked to Barbara, Tommy, Dutch, and Bobby. She'd been talking ever since they left Del Amo but Johnny had been tuning her out until just now. "She dresses like she found all her clothes at the bottom of a little old lady's closet," Susan went on. "I mean, way to be embarrassing!"

"Ah, c'mon," Barbara cajoled. "She's not so bad, Sue--"

"Who are you talking about?" Johnny asked.

Susan huffed in irritation. "Haven't you been listening at all? Danielle, that new girl. You know, the little goombah from New Jersey?"

"She grows on you," Barbara said.

"Like a fungus!" Susan let out peals of laughter. "All I'm saying is, if Ali insists on hanging out with her, our social capital is going to tank. She even tried out for the cheerleading squad, can you even imagine?"

"Those legs in a short little cheerleader's skirt, hell yeah I can imagine it!" Tommy sounded absolutely giddy. Susan yelled "Degenerate!" at him and slapped at his shoulder while Johnny tried to ignore them both. He wasn't really surprised that Ali was taking the new girl under her wing -- she'd always had a soft heart. He expected the familiar ache that always came with thoughts of Ali, but now it was tempered by the image of that girl, Danielle, with her dark braid whipping around as she practiced her cheers, her lithe body leaping into the air and her bouncing the soccer ball off her knee back to him.

A whim came to him: Wouldn't it get Ali good if I went out with her new best friend? It'd just serve her right, after ignoring him for almost two months now. Let her stew in her juices a little, let her think about how good she had it when they were together. And it wasn't like Danielle had any other friends at school who'd get on his case for breaking her heart; she didn't have anyone except for Ali and maybe Barbara, on a good day. The more he thought about it, the more the idea appealed to Johnny.

"Hey, we're about to miss the exit," Bobby pointed out, and Johnny cursed as his reflexes kicked in, guiding them off the 405 and heading into the Hills.

"That was a close one," Susan said from the backseat. "We almost had to cut through Reseda to get home!"

On Saticoy street in Reseda, Danielle Larusso bounded up the steps to her apartment, panting from excitement. "Hey ma!"

"Hi honey!" her mother Lucille greeted her, her eyes twinkling despite the weariness on her face. She was sitting in their half-unpacked living room, rubbing her feet. Everything came bursting out of Danielle in a rush, words stumbling and tripping over each other as she tried to say everything at once. "Whoa, slow down there. What was that?"

"I made the cheerleading squad," Danielle told her, beaming. "Can you believe it, ma? Me, a cheerleader? This coulda never happened in Newark, never!" She proudly handed over a pamphlet with 'West Valley High Cheer' embossed on the cover.

"You're kidding!" Lucille pulled her into a big hug and planted a kiss on one cheek and then the other. "My baby girl made the squad?" She looked through the pamphlet and Danielle's heart sank as her mother reached a page detailing the required supplies. "We gotta buy you a uniform?" Lucille blinked in dismay and Danielle could see her mother mentally doing math. "With my tips... maybe we could get you a uniform for your Christmas present... or even a little earlier, for your birthday."

Danielle's heart had sank through her stomach and disappeared through the floor. "Ah, don't worry about it, ma," she said quickly. She needed a uniform by next week if she wanted a spot on the squad, December would be much too late. Lucille looked up at her, crushed, and Danielle added, "It's stupid anyway."

"Yeah?" Lucille didn't sound convinced.

"Yeah, who wants to be a stupid cheerleader, am I right?" Danielle took the pamphlet and shoved it into her bookbag. "Hey, maybe I'll try out for the chess team. That wouldn't be such a waste of time like dumb ol' cheerleading."

Lucille gave her a savvy look, but Danielle remained resolute. Yeah, they needed some good news after all the crap they'd been through both before and since they'd arrived in Reseda, but what was the use of dreaming about something that was out of her reach? It had been a stupid idea anyway, Danielle told herself that night at dinner. Why had she even let Ali talk her into trying out? What good was being a cheerleader, anyway? Jumping around in short skirts and dating guys like Johnny... ah, she didn't even need any of that in her life!

Ali sat down and placed her books on the bleachers between them. "Wow, I've been looking all over for you! Why didn't you come to cheer practice today?"

"Uh." Danielle blanked on an answer momentarily as she turned to face Ali, her big brown eyes wide. "Ah, ya know, I decided it wasn't for me."

Ali didn't look very convinced by this explanation and Danielle felt her face heat up in embarrassment. She was sure Ali could see right through her, knew all about how broke she was, and maybe worst of all, felt sorry for her. Danielle tucked her knees up closer and wrapped her arms around them, going back to watching the boys at soccer practice.

"If it's about the uniform, we can make it work," Ali said gently. She laid a hand on Danielle's shoulder and rubbed a comforting little circle with her thumb. Danielle couldn't bring herself to say anything. Their peaceful little moment was interrupted by a shrill whistle, and Ali's ex-boyfriend Johnny and his friends running past, whooping and high-fiving and very obviously staring at them. As Ali and Danielle watched, Johnny smiled and made a show of whipping off his shirt.

"Ugh, Johnny!" Ali wrinkled her nose. "What a jerk. Him and his little Cobra Kais, always showing off."

"Why did you guys break up?" Danielle asked her, tearing her eyes reluctantly from Johnny's physique.

"Because of antics like that," Ali said. "He could be so sweet, but his friends in Cobra Kai brought out the jerk in him. They even got him to ditch me on my birthday this summer to go party."

"What's Cobra Kai?" Danielle remembered hearing the phrase a time or two, but she wasn't sure what it was. An upper-crusty kid social club?

"His karate dojo. Johnny's obsessed with it." Ali sighed and stood up, smoothing out her skirt, then offered a hand up to Danielle. "Do you want to study at my place tonight for the algebra test?"

They made plans for their study date, Danielle trying not to be too obvious about the way her eyes kept drifting back over to the boys. Soccer practice was finished now, and they were drinking from their water bottles, laughing, and toweling off. Johnny still didn't have a shirt on, and Danielle stole glances at him. Was it karate that gave him that body? She spaced out a little during her talk with Ali and even during next period's class Danielle found it hard to focus. If she became a cheerleader, could she date hot guys like Johnny? Danielle flushed a little at the thought as she furiously erased a wrong answer from her history quiz. Did wanting to date hot guys make her shallow? Ali was a cheerleader and she had dated Johnny -- she wasn't shallow, Ali was incredibly nice.

Kissing Johnny wouldn't be anything like kissing Frankie Murello with his clammy hands and braces, Danielle was sure of it. She chewed on her pencil.

When she opened her locker, Danielle blinked in surprise to find a small parcel with her name written on it in a neat cursive. She peeked in and gasped as she lifted out a cheerleading uniform. A tap on her shoulder made her whirl around to find Ali standing there, grinning at her.

"Is this yours?" Danielle asked her.

"From last season."

Danielle shook her head. "I can't take this..."

"You'd be doing me a favor," Ali told her, nudging her gently with her elbow. "My mom is a shopaholic and my closet is already way too full. Besides, we need someone like you on the squad. You've got something about you, Danielle."

Danielle knew that, on principle, she should refuse this charity, hand the uniform back to Ali and walk away, go back to her school books and join some boring club that didn't require uniforms. A club or after school activity for poor kids. But she thought of the blonde cheerleaders jumping and waving their pom-poms, the queens of the school, the cachet that could be hers... and the hot guys who wanted girls like Ali. She touched the uniform, admiring their high school logo adorning it, then looked back up to find Ali just glowing with pleasure. In that moment, Danielle saw a whole new future taking form before her.

"C'mon," Ali said, linking arms with her. "My dad's picking us up." Danielle went with her, clutching her uniform tight, feeling ready for everything that lay ahead.
