I thought I knew what love was, what did I know, Part II
Date: 2021-03-18 10:36 pm (UTC)Danielle hadn't exactly been thrilled about leaving what few friends she had made behind in Newark. She'd even held out hope that her mom would pack it in and return to Jersey, but their car was in such bad shape Danielle didn't even think that junker would make it back across the country, so they were probably stuck here.
C'mon honey, her mom Lucille had said. We've got a chance to start all over in the land of palm trees! A new beginning, a new school -- Danielle didn't quite hope to become popular, but maybe her mom was right, maybe she could make some new friends and find her niche.
Ali and her two tagalongs, Susan and Barbara, caught up with her after first period. "Hi, Dani!" Ali greeted her warmly. "I think we have algebra together."
Ali was the quintessential blonde California dream girl. Danielle had never felt more out of place than she did walking next to Ali, but Ali was so damn friendly that she couldn't hold it against her. "Yeah? Wanna swap notes?"
Susan smacked her gum a little louder than necessary.
"Sure! By the way, I'm sorry for how Johnny treated you yesterday." Ali blew a sigh through her nose. "It's been over for weeks and he just hasn't moved on."
"Oh, it's no big deal," Danielle said, trying to play it cool. She had been a little surprised when he pushed her to the side, but it hadn't really been a hard push. "I almost forgot all about it. Anyway, I hope Johnny stops hassling you."
"I don't get why you won't give him another chance," Barbara piped up. "He's the hottest guy in school, Ali, maybe the hottest guy in the Valley! How are you going to do better than Johnny Lawrence?"
"I'm not thinking about boys right now," Ali told Barbara, pressing her books to her chest. "I need to concentrate on my grades if I want to get into UCLA. And Johnny will do fine on his own. Every girl in this school wants to go out with him, he'll find someone new."
Susan and Barbara started teasing each other and Ali about boys they had crushed on or they knew had crushes on them. Danielle felt a little awkward and left out of the conversation about guys. She'd never had a boyfriend -- she'd kissed Frankie Murello under the bleachers two years ago, but then he'd lied and told everyone who'd listen that she'd let him feel her up under her bra, and she'd cried for two weeks.
No one believes him, Dani, her best friend Judy had consoled her, brushing her hair out of her sweaty, tear-stained face. You don't even wear a bra yet.
"Dani," Ali said, snapping her out of her memories. "Are you going to cheerleader tryouts today with us?"
Susan elbowed Ali a little harshly, and Ali shot her a look that Danielle couldn't quite understand. "Ah, sure," Danielle said, twisting a strand of her unruly hair around a finger. "You really think I'm cheerleader material?"
"You've got potential!" Ali told her, and this time, Danielle clearly saw Susan roll her eyes in exasperation. "Tryouts are this afternoon after fourth period, okay?"
"Okay," Danielle agreed, not quite sure what she was getting herself into. Second and third periods flew by, and then she ran to the girls locker room to get changed into her gym clothes. Ali sat beside her on the bench, and helped braid her hair while Danielle furtively glanced around the locker room. All the other girls were so developed, with peaches-and-cream skin like Ali's with a flush of sun coloring their cheeks. Danielle bronzed, not burnt, in the sun, and she looked gawky next to the cheerleaders with their strong arms and legs. None of them still wore a training bra.
Outside on the athletic field, the boys were trying out for soccer. Danielle couldn't help but be distracted momentarily by their gleaming arms and fast footwork. These California boys seemed to be some other breed, the boys back in Newark didn't look like that. Then the captain blew her whistle and Danielle had to snap back to attention, trying the kicks and jumps like Ali showed her.
She was shaking her green-and-white pompoms when the soccer ball came flying over toward her. Without thinking, Danielle caught it, kicking it up and bouncing it off her knee like she used to when she played with Cousin Louie and the neighborhood kids.
It was Johnny, the boy from the beach, who came running to fetch the ball. Their eyes met for a split second; he gave her a strange look then took the ball back and returned to the soccer practice. Danielle watched him go, only belatedly remembering she was supposed to be doing choreography and trying to get back in sync with the other girls before everyone noticed.
