"Who are you talking about?" Johnny asked.
Susan huffed in irritation. "Haven't you been listening at all? Danielle, that new girl. You know, the little goombah from New Jersey?"
"She grows on you," Barbara said.
"Like a fungus!" Susan let out peals of laughter. "All I'm saying is, if Ali insists on hanging out with her, our social capital is going to tank. She even tried out for the cheerleading squad, can you even imagine?"
"Those legs in a short little cheerleader's skirt, hell yeah I can imagine it!" Tommy sounded absolutely giddy. Susan yelled "Degenerate!" at him and slapped at his shoulder while Johnny tried to ignore them both. He wasn't really surprised that Ali was taking the new girl under her wing -- she'd always had a soft heart. He expected the familiar ache that always came with thoughts of Ali, but now it was tempered by the image of that girl, Danielle, with her dark braid whipping around as she practiced her cheers, her lithe body leaping into the air and her bouncing the soccer ball off her knee back to him.
A whim came to him: Wouldn't it get Ali good if I went out with her new best friend? It'd just serve her right, after ignoring him for almost two months now. Let her stew in her juices a little, let her think about how good she had it when they were together. And it wasn't like Danielle had any other friends at school who'd get on his case for breaking her heart; she didn't have anyone except for Ali and maybe Barbara, on a good day. The more he thought about it, the more the idea appealed to Johnny.
"Hey, we're about to miss the exit," Bobby pointed out, and Johnny cursed as his reflexes kicked in, guiding them off the 405 and heading into the Hills.
"That was a close one," Susan said from the backseat. "We almost had to cut through Reseda to get home!"
On Saticoy street in Reseda, Danielle Larusso bounded up the steps to her apartment, panting from excitement. "Hey ma!"
"Hi honey!" her mother Lucille greeted her, her eyes twinkling despite the weariness on her face. She was sitting in their half-unpacked living room, rubbing her feet. Everything came bursting out of Danielle in a rush, words stumbling and tripping over each other as she tried to say everything at once. "Whoa, slow down there. What was that?"
"I made the cheerleading squad," Danielle told her, beaming. "Can you believe it, ma? Me, a cheerleader? This coulda never happened in Newark, never!" She proudly handed over a pamphlet with 'West Valley High Cheer' embossed on the cover.
"You're kidding!" Lucille pulled her into a big hug and planted a kiss on one cheek and then the other. "My baby girl made the squad?" She looked through the pamphlet and Danielle's heart sank as her mother reached a page detailing the required supplies. "We gotta buy you a uniform?" Lucille blinked in dismay and Danielle could see her mother mentally doing math. "With my tips... maybe we could get you a uniform for your Christmas present... or even a little earlier, for your birthday."
Danielle's heart had sank through her stomach and disappeared through the floor. "Ah, don't worry about it, ma," she said quickly. She needed a uniform by next week if she wanted a spot on the squad, December would be much too late. Lucille looked up at her, crushed, and Danielle added, "It's stupid anyway."
"Yeah?" Lucille didn't sound convinced.
"Yeah, who wants to be a stupid cheerleader, am I right?" Danielle took the pamphlet and shoved it into her bookbag. "Hey, maybe I'll try out for the chess team. That wouldn't be such a waste of time like dumb ol' cheerleading."
Lucille gave her a savvy look, but Danielle remained resolute. Yeah, they needed some good news after all the crap they'd been through both before and since they'd arrived in Reseda, but what was the use of dreaming about something that was out of her reach? It had been a stupid idea anyway, Danielle told herself that night at dinner. Why had she even let Ali talk her into trying out? What good was being a cheerleader, anyway? Jumping around in short skirts and dating guys like Johnny... ah, she didn't even need any of that in her life!
