Johnny first saw her when she and Ali came splashing out of the water together, laughing and holding hands. He had never seen her before; he would've remembered that long curly dark hair. He didn't think long about her before shoving his helmet back onto his head and roaring down the little path toward them, determined to win Ali back or at least try. Damnit, she had been the one good loving thing in his life -- who could blame him for wanting her back?

Ali's face fell, and she sat down next to her radio and pointedly ignored him. Her new friend, perhaps not knowing anything about the situation, flopped down on the blanket beside her. "C'mon Johnny, let it go," Bobby pleaded behind him, even as Johnny made his way to the girls.

"Ali, just talk to me, all right?"

"No, Johnny!" That fire in her voice, it hit him in all the familiar places. Her cheeks were slightly reddened from the sun and she was yanking on her sweater over her little blue swimsuit. "There's nothing to talk about. It's over between us."

"It's not over for me--" he started to say, and then she turned up the radio, trying to drown him out. Johnny growled in frustration. If she would just talk to him, he was sure he could fix things between them. He reached over and turned the radio off.

Ali glared at him. "I was listening to that."

"Now you're not. Anyway, we can work this out."

"Hey!" The dark-haired girl jumped to her feet and got in his face. Was she wearing a wet sports bra and a pair of bike shorts? What kind of girl didn't even have a swimsuit to wear to the beach? "Where I'm from, a girl tells a guy it's over, it's over!"

"Yeah, well why don't you butt out and go back to wherever you're from!" Now Johnny was really irritated. He was just trying to have a civil conversation and it was going all pear-shaped. Now that stupid radio was back on and Ali was back to trying to ignore him. He pushed past the new girl and tried to talk to Ali again.

"Hey!" the new girl yelped.

"Johnny, c'mon," Bobby said. "Don't go shoving the girls, man!"

"Yeah, way to go, Johnny." Ali's eyes were blazing. "It's only Danielle's second day in California, way to show her what lunkheads the local guys are." She snatched up her radio, linked arms with this Danielle girl, and they strutted away from him, Susan and Barbara following closely behind. Johnny was powerless to do anything but let them walk away.

"Ah, better luck next time," Jimmy told him.

Johnny cut him a look over his shoulder.

Tommy cackled. "I dunno, did you see that new girl? Daniela or whatever? She's pretty cute."

"She's not even in Ali's league," sniffed Johnny, indignant at the thought of even comparing another girl to his Ali.

"Maybe not, but she had legs up to her neck! And you know what they say -- the best way to get over one girl is to get on top of another one."

"Does anyone really say that?" Bobby sounded skeptical.

Johnny didn't reply, just stormed over to his bike and cranked it up, sand streaming behind him like a plum as he headed back up the path. At the crest of the hill he paused, revving the engine, still watching the distant figures as they made their way down the beach, the setting sun bathing them in warm golden tones, setting Ali's shorter blonde hair aglow while Danielle's long dark hair danced around her on the breeze.
