Miguel is insecure about being in a bathing suit because of the extensive surgery scars on his back.
To make him feel better everyone compares their own scars and tells the stories behind them.

“I wish I could say that you won’t always feel that way, but I can’t swear that. I can swear that no one else is going to feel the same way about them that you do. As they fade, other people won’t even notice them, no matter how bad and obvious they are to you.”
“How can you know that?”
“Well. Do my scars bother you?”
“What scars?”
“Most people don’t notice them unless I point them out, but to me they’re the ugliest part of me.”
“How do you even get scars like that?”
“Cobra Kai.”
“Wait, what? How?”
“For reasons that I’m not willing to get into, I ended up training with Kreese’s war buddy, Terry Silver. Except it was less training and more torture designed specifically to make me bleed. They succeeded.”
“Is that why Cobra Kai was banned from competition?”
“Partly. Mostly, though, it was their conduct at the ’85 tournament. Specifically the match against me.”
“What’d they do?”
“You can watch it on YouTube. The All Valley Committee has put up all the fights that were video’d over the years. I didn’t want it up, but I was overruled.”
“That doesn’t sound legal. I don’t think they can use your likeness without your permission.”
“There’s a waiver clause on the entry form. The All Valley Committee has a lot of leeway on what they can do with the pictures and videos. And they don’t really care if you only signed the paper under extreme duress. What’s a little PTSD from being dangled over a cliff compared to all the ad revenue.”
“What?!”
“It was… not the best few months of my life and also not really the point. The point is that if I hadn’t pointed them out, you’d have never noticed my scars, but to me… Sometimes they’re all I can see. These are more obvious right now, but they’ll heal and fade and someday you’ll have to point them out.”
“It doesn’t feel that way… even you and Sensei winced.”
“They’re hard for me and Johnny to see because it’s always hard to see the very real consequences of our failures on you kids. We have the same issues with Sam’s scars and Robby’s… everything. We screwed up and you paid a high price for that. All of you did. I am sorry for that, Miguel.”
“Mr. L, no. It wasn’t-“
“We were the adults and yes, Kreese is… actually the literal worst, but we were the ones that brought him and our petty feud into your lives.”
“I mean, that doesn’t seem all that petty to me. It sounds like a legit beef with Cobra Kai.”
“No, I mean. Me and Johnny. And honestly, Kreese’s thing is petty. Instead of accepting that no one wanted him as a sensei because he tried to kill his best student for coming in second, he decided to blame me and Mr. Miyagi for… I don’t know, embarrassing him? Preventing a murder? I don’t pretend to understand how that man thinks. Trying will only make you crazy. Either way, we should have protected you all better. This should never have happened.”
