Johnny was kidnapped for three years as a kid, and escaped when he was 10 years old. No one but his Mom and Sid ever knew about it, (not even Bobby) because Johnny never wanted anyone else to know. (But I'm picturing physical and sexual abuse, and Johnny provoking the kidnapper to protect the other kids.)
People Magazine interviewed him back in the day, and then they want to run a 40 years later story on Johnny and all the other kids who were kidnapped. The author focused on Johnny back in the day, and is still focusing on him now. (The original Magazine cover has Johnny in a wheelchair and scowling, because his mom made him do this stupid interview).
The reporters constantly harassing him for a story bring back all of the old trauma for him, and he doesn't want to talk about it at all. He rebuffs all of their questions for comment, and they end up running the story about all the other kids, and just speculating about what Johnny's up to.
One of the kids from the Dojo sees the new interview, and they all look up the old interview, and the gossip spreads like wildfire. Daniel, Amanda, Carmen, Bobby, and all the kids learn that it was Johnny's idea on how to escape, and he saved all of the other kids who were kidnapped with him.
