After the tournament, Sid goes looking for Johnny to ream him out about his loss, but what he finds is Johnny being sexually assaulted by Kreese. Maybe this gives him flashbacks to something similar happening to someone he knew (maybe a sister), and he’d blocked the memory cause he couldn’t do anything about it then, but now he can. I imagine him hitting Kreese over the head with something and then gathering Johnny up bridal-style and bringing him home to Laura.

After that, something softens in him. He starts taking Johnny to school to make sure he doesn’t ditch, but also to make sure nothing like that happens again. He gets Johnny to tell him who beat him in the tournament so Johnny can train with that dojo. He wants to find Kreese so he can destroy him with some lawsuit, but Johnny stops him. He does a lot of stuff that confuses Johnny, who still absolutely hates him and will never, ever forgive him for what he’s put him through.
