Johnny woke up the next morning with a raging headache, his clothes still on and no one else in the bed, and he would never admit to the relief in his gut that that was the case. He could smell the pot of brewing coffee in the kitchen, probably one of those fancy brands Daniel seemed to gravitate to so much, and that fancy coffee never sounded so good.
He stumbled into the kitchen to find Daniel had already prepared a cup for him, just how he liked it: a small bit of sugar, a smaller bit of cream, just dark enough that he could claim he liked it black.
He took a sip and said, letting the coffee seep into his system, “Thank you.”
Both Daniel and Johnny knew there was more to it than simply a well-made cup of coffee.
“You’re welcome.”
“About last night–”
“Let me finish this cup of coffee before I say anything. I need to be fully awake to tell this story right.”
Johnny looked pointedly at the near-empty coffee cup as he said, “You said some things last night that made me wonder, Larusso.”
Daniel shrugged, taking the last sips and eying the remaining unmelted sugar at the bottom of the mug, and said with a false nonchalance, “Makes sense that you’d want to know, I mean I practically had a meltdown in front of you last night.”
“You know you really didn’t.”
As Daniel poured himself a second cuo of coffee, he said, “Okay, so here it goes. Before I met Amanda and after Kumiko and I broke up, I played the field, finally admitted my bisexuality, dated a guy at the auto dealership I was working at, he’s actually Anoush’s uncle, I wonder how Vartan’s doing, I’ll have to ask–”
Johnny spat out his coffee.
Daniel raised an eyebrow and said, “I’d ask if that were a problem, Johnny Lawrence, but last night certainly answered that question.”
“I just… didn’t know you were bi. But keep going.”
“Okay, so an old nightmare I never thought would visit me again did on my twenty-first birthday. Some friends from work took me out barhopping in the Valley and in the Hollywood area, and they were being so nice about treating me to drinks that I must have gone overboard. I didn’t even notice him showing up and offering to take me to the bathroom, I thought he was just a polite stranger who noticed I was getting sick–”
“Hold up, Larusso. What kind of friends did you have at work, that they’d just let you get carted off by a stranger?”
“I ask myself that question a lot, Johnny,” Daniel said, his voice far sadder than Johnny ever thought Daniel could be, and it occurred to him that outside of Mr. Miyagi… did Daniel really have any friends? Was he a friend? “I was still so wasted after throwing up I didn’t even know what was happening until he shoved his dick in my mouth and wouldn’t stop, not even when I begged him to.”
Of all the things that could have popped into Johnny’s mind, it was the dick graffiti on the Larusso Autos billboard that slapped him deeper into hangover-land.
“Fuck… oh fuck…”
“I didn’t know how drunk you were, and I didn’t want to do to you what he did to me, John.”
They sat in silence for a good long while after that, sipping their coffee and digesting what was said.
“So, how did you get away?”
“My friends must have realized I was gone, because after he came in my mouth but before he could drag me to his hotel room, they all charged at him and chased him out of the bathroom.”
Another pause, and Johnny found himself using those breathing exercises Daniel loved so much to figure out what to say, to get that near-broken look off Daniel’s face. “So you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to, but… how did Mr. Miyagi react?”
To Johnny’s pleasant surprise, Daniel grinned for the first time that morning and said, “Mr. Miyagi tried to kill him when he found out, told him very pointedly that senseis worthy of the title don’t rape their students, no matter how former they were.”
“You had another sensei?”
“That’s another story for another day, Johnny,” Daniel said. “Anyway, I’d like to let the conversation stray to more pleasant topics before we part ways.”
“So… have you seen Iron Eagle yet?”
“I thought we said more pleasant topics, Johnny Lawrence!”
Morning passed far more quickly than either of them anticipated as Johnny as Daniel first bickered about the merits of Iron Eagle versus Top Gun, then the merits of the original Voltron versus its late 2010s reboot, then agreed that Stardust was a severely underrated movie, and then they talked about how that was the first movie either had taken their kids to (Robby and Sam had both loved it). The conversation went ever onward and neither could bring themselves to stop talking, let alone stop staring at each other and wondering if an intimate move would be made, hoping it would.
Johnny was the first to face the clock and say, “It’s 12:45pm right now.”
Daniel smiled fondly at Johnny and said, “We have a tendency to lose track of time when we’re together, don’t we, John?”
Both their stomachs gurgled at once. “We should probably order in some lunch.”
“My treat?”
“Oh, definitely your treat, Larusso.”
Daniel pulled up a menu and told Johnny to start thinking about what he wanted to order from the fancy breakfast cafe chain his mother would have loved that seemed particularly in love with mint.
“Seriously?! This place?!”
“Yes, you said it was my treat, and I want some delicious bougie brunch after last night, sue me.” Daniel then proceeded to order the crunchy french toast with a side of bacon before giving Johnny the phone.
“For everything you have, Larusso,” Johnny said, sticking out his tongue at him before ordering the brunch burger and giving Daniel back his phone.
Daniel grinned as the order went through, and he said brightly, “The order’s in and we have an hour to kill before lunch arrives. How about we finally try some kata in the pond?”
An hour to kill, eh? Johnny cocked his head and asked, hoping Daniel would think him sober enough, “You know, I distinctly remember you saying that if I asked you to fuck me again when I was sober, you’d say yes.”
Daniel stood up, a small, shy smile on his face, and said, “Go on."
“Is the offer still on the table?”
“Yes,” Daniel said with a breathlessness that made Johnny weak in the knees. He then grabbed Johnny, slammed him onto the table, and purred, peppering kisses in the back of Johnny’s neck, “and now you are too.”
